Chinnanj chiru kiliye, - kannamma! Selvak kalanjiyame! Ennaik kali theerththe - ulagil Etram puriya vanthaai!
Little parrot, Kannamma! Treasure-house of my wealth! You came to end my sorrows and raise me up in the world!
Pillaik kaniyamuthe - kannamma Pesumpor chiththirame! Alli yanaiththidave - en munne Aadi varun thene!
Child, sweet fruit of nectar, Kannamma, golden picture that speaks! You come dancing before me, my honey, to be gathered up in my arms!
Odi varugaiyile - kannamma! Ullang kuliru thadi! Aadiththirithal kandaal - unnaippoi Aavi thazhuvu thadi!
When you come running, Kannamma, my heart grows cool; when I watch you dance and roam about, my soul runs to embrace you!
Uchchi thanai mugandhaal - karuvam Ongi valaru thadi! Mechchi yunai yooraar - pugazhnthaal Meni silirkkuthadi!
When I kiss the top of your head, my pride swells high; when the townsfolk praise you, my whole body thrills!
Kannaththil muththamittaal - ullanthaan Kalveri kollu thadi! Unnaith thazhuvidilo - kannamma! Unmaththa maaguthadi!
When I kiss your cheek, my heart grows drunk with joy; when I hold you close, Kannamma, I am beside myself!
Satrun mugan sivanthaal - manathu Sanjala maagu thadi! Netri surungak kandaal - enakku Nenjam pathaikku thadi!
If your face reddens even a little, my mind is troubled; if I see your brow wrinkle, my heart trembles!
Unkannil neervazhinthaal - ennenjil Uthiram kottu thadi! Enkannir paavaiyandro? - kannamma! Ennuyir ninna thandro?
If tears flow from your eyes, my heart pours blood; are you not the apple of my eye, Kannamma? Is my life not yours?
Sollu mazhalaiyile - kannamma! Thunbangal theerththidu vaai; Mullaich chirippaale - enathu Moorkkan thavirththidu vaai.
With your babbling words, Kannamma, you take away my sorrows; with your jasmine smile you calm my anger.
Inbak kathaigalellaam - unnaippol Edugal solva thundo? Anbu tharuvathile - unainer Aagumor theyva mundo?
Do the books tell sweet stories as lovely as you? In giving love, is there any god who could equal you?
Maarbil anivatharke - unnaippol Vaira maniga lundo? Seerpetru vaazhvatharke - unnaippol Selvam pirithu mundo?
To wear upon the breast, are there diamonds and gems like you? For a life of honour, is there any wealth other than you?

The story behind Chinnanchiru Kiliye
Kannan Pattu is a cycle of songs in which Bharati imagines the divine, Kannan (Krishna) or Kannamma, in many human relationships: as friend, mother, father, servant, king, disciple, lover and child. This song is titled Kannamma, My Child, and a note in the text says it was sung on seeing Parasakthi, the supreme goddess, as a child.
Bharati himself indicated the raga Bhairavi and the tala Rupakam, and suggested a short swara phrase as a model for the tune. The song has since been set and sung by many Carnatic musicians and used in films, while the poem itself remains Bharati's text.
What Chinnanchiru Kiliye means
Each stanza captures one moment of a parent's love. The child is a little parrot, a treasure, nectar, a talking golden picture. When the child runs up the heart grows cool; a kiss on the head makes the parent swell with pride; praise from neighbours sends a thrill through the body.
The song also knows the other side of love: a flushed face troubles the mind, a wrinkled brow makes the heart tremble, and the child's tears make the parent's heart bleed. The last stanzas ask whether any story, god, diamond or wealth could equal the child. Because Kannan Pattu treats the child as an image of the divine, the song can be heard both as a lullaby of human affection and as a devotional poem.
