Short answer: "I Knew It, I Knew You" is Taylor Swift's original song for Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5. She wrote it from the point of view of the cowgirl doll Jessie, as a song about an unexpected reunion with someone she thought she had lost. It plays over the end credits, was released on 5 June 2026 and, according to Wikipedia's chart summary, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This guide covers what it means, who made it and why it is in the news again this week.

Why people are talking about it again

Two stories landed in the first days of November 2026. Billboard reported that after a screening on Sunday 1 November, Swift and Toy Story 5 director Andrew Stanton took part in a Q&A in which Swift explained why she hesitated to take the job. She said she did not want to "kick somebody off" the project if the studio had already asked another artist, and Stanton said that nobody else had been approached: if she had been unavailable, the film would simply have had no original end-credits song. Variety then reported that the song is nominated in the animated film category of the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, with winners to be announced on 18 November in Hollywood. Wikipedia adds that analysts at IndieWire and The Hollywood Reporter named it an Oscar front-runner for best original song in September.

The credits: who made "I Knew It, I Knew You"?

  • Written by: Taylor Swift; Wikipedia says she wrote it with Jack Antonoff, and Variety lists both as nominated songwriters
  • Produced by: Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff
  • Label: Walt Disney Records, released on 5 June 2026 with radio promotion through MCA Nashville and Republic Records
  • Length: 2 minutes 58 seconds
  • Instruments: Wikipedia lists 14, including banjo, mandolin, harmonica, saxophone, celesta, Hammond organ and Mellotron; Antonoff plays nine of them, with members of his band Bleachers and others joining
  • Background vocals: Swift, Antonoff and Sam Dew
  • Recorded at: Electric Lady Studios in New York and Tamarind Studios in Los Angeles; mixed by Laura Sisk and mastered by Ruairi O'Flaherty
  • Film: Toy Story 5, in cinemas from 19 June 2026; the rest of the score is by Randy Newman

How it was written in a day

Billboard and Wikipedia describe the same sequence. Wikipedia says she had been approached by September 2025. At the Q&A she recalled that after taking a couple of months to come back to the project she asked whether the team had replaced her. When her schedule opened up in February 2026 she asked to see the film. After an early screening she went to the studio with Antonoff, and the song was written, produced and recorded within about eight hours. Stanton told the Q&A audience that he got choked up the first time he heard it, comparing it to the moment Randy Newman first played "You've Got a Friend in Me" on piano. Swift has also said that Newman's chord progressions informed how she approached the song, and Newman has endorsed her contribution.

What does the song mean?

Because the lyrics are under copyright, we are not printing or quoting them here. You can read them on the official release. Here is what the artists and critics say about it.

  • It is told by Jessie. Swift said the song was inspired by Jessie's story across the Toy Story films. The theme is friendship, memory and reconnecting with someone you believed you had lost.
  • It answers an old Toy Story song. Several critics read it as a reply to "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2, in which Jessie sings about being abandoned by her owner Emily. The Guardian's Laura Snapes described the new song as a moment of gentle elation in which Jessie recognises Emily after years apart.
  • It also works outside the film. Wikipedia notes that, like other Toy Story songs, it is told from a toy's point of view but is not tied to the toy and owner relationship. A listener can hear it as a reunion with an old friend or a former partner.
  • The opening lines carry double meanings. Swift has explained that one word sounds like "days" while also evoking the haze of childhood memory, that the grass imagery points to the toys' small size, and that another image works both as a protective figure and as a nod to the army toys in the first film.

The sound: Swift's return to country

Reviewers describe an upbeat country-pop ballad at a mid-tempo pace, with a folk and blues-influenced bassline, Americana harmonica, banjo and saxophone, and a key change in the bridge. USA Today compared it with her earlier songs "The Best Day", "Betty" and "Dorothea", while the Telegraph heard a 1970s soft-pop quality. Wikipedia reports that it debuted at No. 8 on the Country Airplay chart, the first debut in that chart's top 10 by a female artist and only the second ever, after Garth Brooks in 2007. The piano and acoustic versions give it a slower, more intimate feel, and the film's world premiere featured Swift playing it live on piano before joining Randy Newman for "You've Got a Friend in Me".
