Desamunu preminchumanna Manchi annadi penchumanna! Votti matalu kattipettoyi Gatti mel talapettavoyi.
Love your country, brother, nurture all that is good, brother! Put away your empty words, set your mind on solid good deeds.
Padipantalu pongiporle Darilo nuvu patupadavoyi; Tindi kaligite kanda kaladoyi; Kanda kalavadenu manishoyi!
On the road where milk and harvests overflow, put in your hard work; where there is food there is strength, and only one with strength is truly a man!
Yisuromani manushulunte Desame gati bagupadunoyi? Jaldukoni kalalella nerchuku Desi sarakulu nimpavoyi.
If people sit about sighing in despair, how will the country ever prosper? Hurry, learn every art and skill, and fill the land with home-made goods.
Anni desal krammavale noyi Desi sarukula nammavalenoyi! Dabbu telenatti narulaku Kirti sampada labbavoyi.
Our own goods must reach every country, our own goods must be sold everywhere! People who cannot bring in wealth will win neither fame nor fortune.
Venaka chusina karyamemoyi? Manchi gatamuna konchemenoyi Mandaginchaka mundu adugeyi Venukapadite venake noyi!
What is gained by looking back? The good in the past is only a little. Do not slacken, step forward; whoever falls behind stays behind!
Punu spardhanu vidyalande Vairamulu vanijyamande, Vyartha kalaham penchabokoyi Katti vairam kalchavoyi
Take up rivalry in learning, let competition be in trade; do not stir up pointless quarrels, burn away the enmity of the sword.
Desabhimanam naku kaddani Votti goppalu cheppukokoyi Puni edainanu vokamel Kurchi janulaku chupavoyi
Do not merely boast that you love your country; resolve to do some good deed and show it to the people.
Orvalemipisachi desam Mulugulu pilchesenoy, Orula meluku santasistu Aikamatyam nerchavoyi
The demon of envy has sucked the marrow of the land; rejoice in the good of others and learn to live in unity.
Parula kalimiki porli yedche Papi kekkada sukham kaddoyi? Okari mel tana melanenche Nerpariki mel kollaloyi!
Where is happiness for the wretch who rolls and weeps at others' wealth? For the wise one who counts another's good as his own, good things come in plenty!
Svanta labham konta manuku Porugu vadiki todupadavoyi Desamante matti kadoyi Desamante manushuloyi!
Give up a little of your own gain, lend a hand to your neighbour. A country is not its soil; a country is its people!
Chettapattal pattukoni Desasthulanta naduvavalenoyi Annadammula valenu jatulu Matamulanniyu melagavalenoyi
Hand in hand, all the people of the land must walk together; like brothers, all communities and all religions must live as one.
Matam veraitenu yemoyi? Manasu lokatai manushulunte Jatamannadi lechi perigi Lokamuna raninchunoyi!
What does it matter if religions differ? If people live with hearts united, the nation will rise and grow and shine before the world!
Desamaniyedi doddavruksham Premalanu pulettavalenoyi, Narula chamatanu tadisi mulam, Dhanam pantalu pandavalenoyi!
The great tree that is our country must blossom with flowers of love; its roots soaked in people's sweat, it must bear harvests of wealth!
Akulanduna anagimanagi Kavita koyila palakavalenoyi; Palukulanu vini desamandabhi Manamulu molakettavalenoyi!
Hidden among its leaves, the koel of poetry must sing; hearing its song, love for the country must sprout across the land!

The story behind Desamunu Preminchumanna
Gurajada Venkata Apparao (1862-1915) was a playwright, poet and social reformer from the Vizianagaram region, best known for his play Kanyasulkam, a satire on the custom of bride price. He championed the use of spoken Telugu in literature instead of the formal classical idiom.
Telugu Wikisource records that the poem, under the heading Desabhakti, was written around 1910 and published in the newspaper Krishna Patrika on 9 August 1913. It appeared during the Swadeshi period, when Indian writers urged people to make and buy Indian goods, and its stanzas reflect that mood. The poem is taught in Telugu schools, recited at Independence Day and Republic Day events, and sung to several popular tunes.
What Desamunu Preminchumanna means
The poem is practical rather than romantic. Gurajada asks readers to stop making empty speeches and do solid good work: grow food, learn every art and skill, fill the land with native goods and sell them abroad, compete in learning and trade instead of with swords.
He warns against envy, idle boasting about patriotism and looking back to a glorified past, saying that whoever falls behind stays behind. The heart of the poem is the stanza that defines a country as its people, followed by a call for people of all castes and religions to walk hand in hand like brothers. In the closing image the nation is a great tree whose roots are watered by people's sweat, whose flowers are love, and among whose leaves the koel of poetry sings.
